So, how much paint do I need?

When performing painting work, it is often necessary to define the paint to be spent for the matter of painting a certain area (sqr. ft). A simple paint calculator may be created in Ms Excel.

Use five table cells for the following data:

  • Height of the area to be pained (let it be cell A1)
  • Width of the area to be pained (let it be cell A2)
  • Average paint loss in sqr. ft per l (let it be A3)
  • Number of layers put while painting (let it be A4)

Now complete cell A5 with the following formula:

=A1*A2/A3*A4

That’s the lot. Now you can fill in any data for the height, width, average paint loss and number of layers. Cell A5 will bring you the paint needed (l) for any such conditions.

How much paint do I need for a ceiling?

Sometimes a paint calculator may be easier. Painting a ceiling is just the case. You need no more than one layer for painting our ceiling. What matters is:

  • Length of your room (ft)
  • Width of your room (ft)
  • Type of the paint to be used (different paint types have various average loss per sqr. ft)

How much paint do I need for walls?

Wall is a harder case. To make your paint calculator work properly for this case, you have to complete it with the following:

  • Type of paint to be used
  • Length of the room (ft)
  • Width of the room (ft)
  • Height of the room / walls (ft)
  • Area of windows (sqr. ft)
  • Area of doors (sqr. ft)

  • Number of windows

How much paint do I need for a floor?

Twice or more amounts than it takes for the ceiling, because qualified floor painting requires more than 1 layer to be put.

How much paint do I need for my room?

To sum up the things said above, to answer this question you have to know:

  • How many square meters your room is (the area of the floor/the ceiling)
  • How high your room is (the height of the walls)
  • Now many square meters your walls are
  • Number and area of windows
  • Number and area of doors
  • Average loss of the paint you choose
  • How many layers you want to put

How to paint premises?

Take advice on how to do the task properly.

  • Before you start:
  • It is great to empty your room completely. If some things are still inside, move them and cover them with cloths.
  • Before painting read the instruction on paint containers.
  • Remove all the wax polishing from the areas to be painted, because it might prevent paint from sticking and drying.
  • Before polishing and painting, air the premises thoroughly – open all the doors and windows.
  • Turn off the power supply, remove switches and outlets to be able to paint surfaces behind them.
  • Where you use more than one paint container for the same color, first mix all the paint in one big container to avoid different color depths.
  • If you are about to glue wallpapers, get through all the painting work and dry the paint thoroughly.
  • Remember about lighting. When it is bright enough, the faults in work are clearly visible, which is enough for quick avoiding them.

The state of surfaces to be painted

Walls and ceilings are supposed to be clean, dry and smooth. If the old paint has no cracks and is dry enough, you need no special preparation. Just get rid of small cracks and remove dust before painting.

If the surface is not ideal for painting:

  • Fill the cracks with a universal filler if they are small
  • You need special preparation for big cracks.
    • Remove all the garbage from the crack. Then make the so-called “seaters” for a new plaster.
    • Move the plaster thoroughly before you gain proper consistence, use a small brush to moisture the crack.
    • Be accurate while filling the crack with the putty.
